Dr Paul Brock Stem Cell Scholarship

The Dr Paul Brock Stem Cell Scholarship provides up to $75,000 cash over three years to support PhD research in the emerging field of Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells.

iPS cells show similar properties to embryonic stem cells and while recent international developments are at an early stage they show promise for a range of therapeutic areas being pursued in NSW.

The Scholarship aims to:
• Support PhD students working with adult as well as embryonic stem cells;
• Expand the knowledge base and research capability to see advances made in adult and embryonic stem cell research in NSW, nationally and internationally through the use of iPS cell techniques; and
• Encourage the development of research that is of benefit to the community.

Funding is in the form of a cash scholarship of up to $25,000 per annum (ex GST) for a PhD level research project over three years (total $75,000).

On 25 May 2009, Henry Chung from the University of New South Wales was named as the inaugural winner of the Dr Paul Brock Stem Cell Scholarship.

Dr Paul Brock AM

The scholarship has been named in recognition of Dr Paul Brock AM for his significant and ongoing contributions to public debate on stem cell sciences. Dr Brock is the Director of Learning and Development Research in the NSW Department of Education and Training, an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney, and Vice Patron of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, NSW. Dr Brock has Motor Neurone Disease, a still incurable and terminal condition for which the average period of survival between diagnosis and death is between 2-3 years. While some people survive for less than this, others like Dr Brock do survive for longer periods.
