Medical Research

The NSW Office for Science and Medical Research is the lead NSW Government agency responsible for policy and funding for medical research. We work in partnership with other NSW Government agencies, medical research institutes, and CRCs to ensure the outcomes of medical research add value to the health system and to the people of NSW.

NSW Health is responsible for ensuring that the people of NSW are provided with the best possible health care. NSW Health monitors the performance of the NSW public health system and supports the statutory role of the NSW Minister for Health. It is responsible for the state’s public health organisations including Area Health Services, the Ambulance Service of NSW; and the Institute for Clinical Excellence.

These organisations plan, deliver and coordinate local health services. They are responsible for providing services such as public and community health, public hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, emergency transport, acute care, rehabilitation, counselling, and many community support programs.

The NSW Cancer Institute was created by the NSW Government in July 2003 to guide the cancer control effort in NSW and enhance its effectiveness. The Institute supports and commissions cancer research, enhances prevention and early detection programs, commission’s innovative cancer treatment programs, and develops cancer education and information programs. The Cancer Institute works closely with OSMR to ensure its research programs are consistent with NSW Government policy and strategy.

The Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care also contributes to medical research in NSW.
