ANZAC Research Institute The ANZAC Research Institute has a primary focus on aging and aims to co-ordinate the esearch at all levels from public and population health, to clinical research, molecular physiology (animal models) as well as cell and molecular biology. It is located at Concord Repatriation Hospital.
Black Dog Institute The Black Dog Institute is an educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in mood disorders - a range of disorders that include depression and Bipolar Disorder (formerly called 'manic depression'). The Institute is attached to the Prince of Wales Hospital and affiliated with the University of New South Wales.
Bosch Institute The Bosch Institute is a centre for medical research in Sydney and brings together basic and clinical research scientists to tackle major unsolved questions about the human body in health and in illness. It is a joint initiative of the University of Sydney and the NSW Health Service.
Brain and Mind Research Institute The BMRI was established to integrate clinical and basic neurosciences research in Australia. Through discovery, innovative and integrative research strategies, clinical product development and the application of research initiatives, the BMRI directly benefits people whose lives have been affected by the common and debilitating forms of psychiatric and neurological illness. The Institute is part of Sydney University Neuroscience, a research network of the many labs contributing to neuroscience research at the University of Sydney.
Cancer Institute NSW The Cancer Institute NSW was established in July 2003 through the Cancer Institute NSW Act 2003 as a response to the need to further decrease the devastating impact of cancer on our society. The Institute is charged with improving cancer control in NSW. Funded by the NSW State Government, iprovides expert advice and resources to patients, the public, health care professionals and the Government.
Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology The Centenary Institute is an independent medical research centre. It is located in Sydney, Australia. The Institute was established by an Act of the NSW Parliament in 1985 and has formal affiliations with both the University of Sydney Medical School and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Centre for Complementary Medicine Research (CompleMED) Based at the University of Western Sydney, CompleMED promotes evidence-based approaches to the use of complementary medicines within a wide range of healthcare applications, including traditional chinese medicine. A range of issues at the forefront of health services development are tackled by CompleMED, notably the integration of complementary medicine with modern medicine.
Centre for Health Informatics The Centre is a collaborative venture between the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering at the University of NSW and engages in research, development and commercialisation of information and communication technologies for health care delivery.
Centre for Immunology The Centre for Immunology is a joint Centre of St Vincent's Hospital and the University of New South Wales. It is committed to excellence in biomedical research and engages in fundamental scientific research in the fields of immunology and cell biology with relevance to allergy, inflammatory disease and HIV/AIDS.
Centre for Perinatal Health Services Research The NSW Centre for Perinatal Health Services Research was established to bring together the perinatal health service research and education efforts of a number of groups with responsibility for perinatal health services research in New South Wales. The Centre's overall objective is to improve the process and outcome of care for mothers and infants in NSW through research and education promoting evidence-based practice.
Centre for Vascular Research The Centre was created to bring together scientists and physicians to research the causes and treatment of occlusion of the blood vessels. Staff are based at the UNSW Faculty of Medicine Wallace Wurth Building, John Curtin School of Medical Research and Monash University.
Children's Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) The Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA) is the only independent medical research institute in Australia dedicated to research into the causes, cure and prevention of childhood cancer. It occupies two sites in Randwick, Sydney and is closely affiliated with both the Sydney Children’s Hospital and the University of New South Wales.
Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) The Children’s Medical Research Institute conducts fundamental genetic research to understand the genes important for health and development, and the underlying causes of disease. The CMRI is not-for-profit and fully independent and currently has seven research units: Cancer Research, Cell Biology, Cell Transformation, Embryology, Cell Signalling, Gene Therapy and Muscle Development.
Garvan Institute of Medical Research The Garvan Institute focuses on gene based medical research and is committed to delivering new insights into major diseases and novel ways to prevent and treat these disorders. It was established as an autonomous, non-profit research institute in 1984 and has formal affiliations with the University of NSW and St Vincent’s Hospital.
George Institute for International Health The mission of the George Institute for International Health is to help reduce the global burden of non-communicable diseases and injuries through health research, policy development and capacity building. Populations of the Asian and Western Pacific regions are a major focus of Institute activities. It is formally associated with the University of Sydney and the Central Sydney Area Health Service.
Heart Research Institute The Heart Research Institute was established in 1989 as a non-profit company by the National Heart Foundation of Australia. It aims to solve the problem of atherosclerosis, or clogging of the arteries.
Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) The Hunter Medical Research Institute supports and promotes research initiatives by the University of Newcastle, Hunter Health and the community generally.
Institute for Bone and Joint Research The Institute for Bone and Joint Research is devoted to advancing our understanding of the disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, their diagnosis and treatments.
Institute for Eye Research The Institute for Eye Research undertakes and funds a range of research projects directed towards improved understanding and the development of new vision correction products and systems. The Institute also contributes to the development of teaching materials and educational programs in the eyecare area. The programs also contribute to technology transfer, improved eyecare services and the promotion of eyecare awareness throughout the world.
Institute of Magnetic Resonance Research The IMRR was established in 1995 with a foundation group of medical specialists and scientists committed to the development of magnetic resonance (MR) technology to improve health care. The IMRR was established based on a successful cancer research and development programme and has now extended into other areas, including infectious diseases, pain management, metabolism and neurosciences.
Kolling Institute of Medical Research The Kolling Institute of Medical Research was established in 1920 and is the oldest medical research institute in NSW. Its research is focused on renal medicine, growth research, cancer genetics, laboratory and community genetics, and perinatal medicine. It is located on the grounds of Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.
Melanoma & Skin Cancer Research Institute The Melanoma & Skin Cancer Research Institute is a joint venture of the Melanoma Foundation and the Dermatology Foundation of the University of Sydney, based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. It joins together the clinicians and researchers of the Sydney Melanoma Unit and the Belisario Institute of Dermatology to provide a centre for clinical care, clinical and biological research and treatment for people with melanoma and skin cancer.
National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research The National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research was founded in 1986 and its research focuses on HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis.
National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) The National Institute of Complementary Medicine's mission is to build the capacity of complementary medicine research across Australia, effectively connecting complementary medicine researchers and professionals with the broader research community, industry and other stakeholders, to provide strategic focus and foster excellence in research.
NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre The CTC runs large multicentre clinical trials, takes part in trials of national and international collaborative trial groups and contributes expertise to trials run by others. The CTC was established in 1988 as a research unit of the National Health and Medical Research Council. It is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney.
Pain Management Research Institute (PMRI) PMRI is the only centre in Australia with integrated patient management, research and postgraduate teaching programs in anaesthesia and pain management. The PMRI is a part of the University of Sydney and based at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.
Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (POWMRI) POWMRI is situated on the Prince of Wales Hospital site, adjacent to the Medical School of the University of NSW. The Institute was officially opened on 8 November 1993. The Institute has grown to become the largest aggregates of research on the brain and nervous system in Australia.
Save Sight Institute The Institute is part of the University of Sydney and provides clinical services at Sydney Eye Hospital and Westmead Hospital and organises and teaches graduate and post-graduate programs in ophthalmology. The SSI conducts science vision research in three key areas: clinical, community and laboratory.
Sax Institute The Sax Institute is a unique organisation in Australia and has at its foundation a coalition of University and research groups undertaking population health and health services research in NSW.
Schizophrenia Research Institute The Schizophrenia Research Institute is a non-profit, NHMRC accredited, independent research institute undertaking world-class studies to understand the causes of schizophrenia. Formed in 1996 and funded by Government, corporate and private donations, it is an "institute without walls" which utilises research and infrastructure facilities located in teaching hospitals, universities and research institutes, as well as domestic and international collaborations, in driving its proactive research agenda.
Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Established in memory of the renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Victor Chang AC, the Institute conducts research into all forms of heart disease, but its primary focus is the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart muscle diseases. The Institute was launched in 1994 and is now a major partner in the St Vincent's Campus and is affiliated with the University of New South Wales.
Westmead Millennium Institute The Westmead Millennium Institute is based at Westmead in Sydney. Its research focus encompasses biomedical research in cancer and leukaemia, microbiology and infectious diseases, immunology, multiple sclerosis, liver, kidney and eye disease and genetic epidemiology, using the basic tools of molecular and cell biology, especially genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, cell imaging and transgenics.
Woolcock Institute of Medical Research The Woolcock Institute of Medical Research is Australia's leading respiratory and sleep research organisation. World-class researchers investigate the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breathing and sleep related disorders. Located in Camperdown, Sydney, the Woolcock conducts research into: asthma, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, sleep apnea, fatigue & shift work, smoking cessation, emphysema, mesothelioma, allergies, hay fever and air pollution. The Woolcock Institute also invests time educating Australians about these disorders and disseminating the latest research findings.
Medical Research Networks
Australia New Zealand Spinal Cord Injury Network (ANZSCIN) ANZSCIN was established in 2007 to advance research and clinical trials into spinal cord injury and disease. Supported by the NSW Government, this Network draws together leading researchers, clinicians and key stakeholders from Australia and New Zealand. ANZSCIN is working towards accelerating treatments for spinal cord injury and disease, addressing consumer priorities and improving practice. The Network creates inclusive processes and clear structures that promote communication and collaboration between researchers, health professionals, consumers, politicians and government departments.
NSW Stem Cell Network The NSW Stem Cell Network is a professional community with an interest in both adult and embryonic stem cells. It encompasses the science, medicine, ethics, law, business and public awareness of stem cells. The Network organises events to discuss ethical, scientific and other developments in stem cell research.
