Applications for life sciences research awards invited

Minister for Science and Medical Research Frank Sartor has invited scientists and researchers from the US, Europe and Asia to relocate to NSW to develop their careers under a new scheme to boost the knowledge base and research capability in NSW. Announcing the NSW Life Science Research Awards – a $5 million incentive for internationally-based researchers to continue their work in NSW – Mr Sartor said the NSW Government aimed to attract the best scientific minds to NSW.

NSW-based research gets funding boost

The NSW Government's investment in Cooperative Research Centres is bringing positive results, with four NSW-based centres achieving success in the latest round of highly competitive Commonwealth funding. "Four Cooperative Research Centres with headquarters or substantial research activity in NSW have bid for, and won, over $125 million from the Commonwealth CRC Programme, with over $75 million to be spent in NSW," said Minister for Science and Medical Research Frank Sartor.

Travel scholarships offered

The NSW Office for Science and Medical Research has established a fund for travel scholarships and will invite applications over the coming year for individuals to attend conferences in areas of strategic priority, including: clinical trials; complementary medicine; stem cell research and commercialisation; and sustainability technologies. Travel scholarships of up to $3,000 are currently being offered to attend the Developing Clinical Research Hubs in Asia conference and workshops being held in Singapore from 26 February to 1 March 2007. Further details with selection criteria and an application package will be posted on the OSMR website on 5 February 2007.

Premier's Macquarie Bank Science Scholarships offered

Applications are invited for the Premier's Macquarie Bank Science Scholarships (part of the NSW Premier's Teacher Scholarships program). Five scholarships of $15,000 will be awarded in 2007 for a study in any aspect of science education (two scholarships are designated for teachers in non-metropolitan NSW). Time need not be spent in formal study, but may involve a program of visits to schools and institutions to conduct interviews, observe exemplary practices and collect resources for the preparation of teaching materials related to a specific aspect of science education.

New Resources

Calendar of Events

Life science researchers in NSW now have an essential new resource to assist them in their work. The recently launched OSMR Research Roadmap is a new website providing an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the regulatory framework applicable to life science-based research, innovation and product development in NSW.

The Roadmap is for scientific researchers in all fields of science related to biology, and companies involved in the development and production of biologically based scientific and medical products, and will assist anyone conducting or considering initiating these activities in NSW. 

The Roadmap considers the specific statutory and non-statutory regulatory frameworks for research and innovation in life sciences, covering human health, animal research, medical products and devices, environmental research, agriculture and food, and gene technology. Each section provides information related to ethics, regulation, intellectual property, lab safety, funding and support.

The Roadmap can be accessed at www.researchroadmap.osmr.nsw.gov.au. Hard copies are also available from OSMR.
