Science Careers
Science EXPOsed
Science EXPOsed was established by OSMR in 2004 in partnership with the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET). It is a free annual two-day event attended by over 1,500 Year 8 and 9 students, introducing them to the many possible careers science can offer through interactive exhibits, workshops, science shows, panel discussions, competitions and hands-on experiments.
By exploring the latest developments in science and technology and their relevance to society, Science EXPOsed aims to encourage more students to pursue science-based careers.
This year the event was held from 18 to 19 October in Macquarie Street Parliamentary landmarks, with events hosted at the NSW Parliament House, the Mint and Hyde Park Barracks.

Ultimo Science Festival Sponsorship
The Ultimo Science Festival is an annual five-day event which brings together scientific research, technology, engineering, design, education, communication and entertainment during National Science Week.
Open to the public, the festival includes science tours, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, exhibitions, concerts and forums on topical science issues, such as forensic and nuclear science, biotechnology and genetic engineering, sustainable technologies, and climate change.
The Festival is a partnership between the University of Technology, Sydney, ABC Ultimo Centre, Ultimo TAFE and the Powerhouse Museum, sponsored by OSMR and the City of Sydney.

NSW Young Science Ambassador Scholarship
The NSW Government has established the NSW Young Science Ambassador Scholarship in partnership with the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). The NYSF is an annual two-week residential programme for students moving into Year 12 who are considering a career in science, engineering and technology.
Competitively selected candidates live on campus at the Australian National University in Canberra in January each year, where they have the opportunity to meet a range of scientist and researchers, debate hot topics in science and engineering and network with other like minded students.
The OSMR Young Science Ambassador Scholarship assists NYSF students to attend and present at overseas youth scientific forums and international study tours. Since 2005, OSMR has provided funding for students to attend international conferences such as the Canada Wide Science Fair, London International Youth Science Forum, Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar and National Youth Science Week in Pretoria, South Africa as well as a scientific study tour of Russia organised by the All-Russian Youth Aerospace Society.
Careers in Science
The Careers in Science initiative aims to encourage students to study science at school and university and subsequently to choose a career in science. Materials, including a website, brochure and fact sheets, were developed for both student and adult audiences (teachers and parents), informing them of careers open to scientifically-educated people.
Using lesson plans developed by the NSW Department of Education and Training and the Board of Vocational Education and Training, science teachers and careers advisers have been helping Year 9 and 10 students learn about the impact of science on daily life, the types of science-related careers available upon completion of tertiary science degrees and how to use resources for researching careers.
Partners in the Careers in Science initiative are Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and the NSW Office for Science and Medical Research (OSMR).
